Video Gaming and Education 9 th Grade Research Paper

MLA Notes

MLA General Guidelines O Type on white 8.5” x 11” paper O Double-space everything O Use 12 pt. Times New Roman font O Set all margins to 1 inch on all sides O Indent the first line of paragraphs one half- inch O Header with page numbers in the upper right corner for every page.

First Page  No Title Page  In the upper left corner of the 1 st page, list your name, your instructor’s name, the course, and date  Center the paper’s title (use standard caps but no underlining, italics, quote or bold)  Create a header in the upper right corner at half inch from the top and one inch from the right of the page (include your last name and page number)  DO NOT PUT “page, p. pg.” – JUST THE NUMBER!  Make sure that each page has a new number!

Example of First Page

What are Parenthetical Citations? O Used in the body of your paper whenever you use someone else’s work in your paper. O Quotes, summary, paraphrase, research, ideas, etc. O If you don’t cite these items in your paper then you are stating that you came up with them and they belong to you…which is plagiarism.

Quoting, summarizing and paraphrasing  Quote:  Quoting means to repeat another source word for word, using quotation marks  Summarizing:  Summarizing means to take ideas from a large passage of another source and condense them, using your own words  Paraphrasing:  Paraphrasing means to use the ideas from another source but change the phrasing into your own words  These all count for someone else’s work…and you must cite them (even if you have re-worded them!)

Keys to Parenthetical Citations O Keep these as simple as possible! O Keep references brief O Give only information needed to identify the source on your Works Cited page O Do not repeat unnecessary information O Follow the rules! O ***Never begin a sentence with a quote. O So instead of saying O “It is not our abilities that show us who we truly are, it is our choices” (Rowling 486). O Say O In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Professor Dumbledore states, “It is not our abilities that show us who we truly are, it is our choices” (Rowling 486).

Parenthetical Citations (Examples) Parenthetical Citations Works Cited O (James 220). O (Lynch). O (Extreme Sports). O James, Nancy E. "Two Sides of Paradise: The Eden Myth According to Kirk and Spock." Spectrum of the Fantastic. Ed. Donald Palumbo. Westport: Greenwood, O Lynch, Tim. "DSN Trials and Tribble-ations Review." Psi Phi: Bradley's Science Fiction Club. Bradley University, Oct O “Extreme Sports Not About Risk-taking: Study.” Medical News Today.com. Queensland University of Technology, 13 July Web. 2 June 2010.

Works Cited Page O Make sure you have a header O Cite your sources in MLA style (CitationMachine.net) O Put your citations in alphabetical order O Make sure you have the correct spacing O Each line in a citation after the first line must have a hanging indent.

In the Library… What to expect while in the Library

Library Daily Requirements O Use the Library Daily Requirements sheet to help ensure that you are on task and that you do not fall behind. O *If you are absent, the Library Daily Requirements sheet will help you keep up because you can use it to work from home. O Let’s read the Library Daily Requirements sheet as a class…

Symbaloo O For your first research paper, sources have already been found for you. O You will use our symbaloo website to find your five sources…there are more than 5 sources on the symbaloo website, which means you still need to take the time to look through them and choose the best 5 for YOUR paper. O Let’s take a look: ository ository

RP Fact Sheet O The Research Paper Fact Sheet is what you will use to record all of your facts that will later become your Concrete Details in your paper. O Let’s take a look at how use your Research Paper Fact sheet with your sources…

Parenthetical Citations Citing Multiple sources, Types of Citations

Practicing Parenthetical Citations O Complete the Citations Practice passed out to you in class today. O Use your notes to help you O We will be doing a quick whip to go over this activity, so be prepared.

RP Outline

Creating an Outline O You have an outline already set up for you in your research paper packets. (Think Shaping the Essay handout we did for our essays) O For the next two days you will be completing this outline. O You CD’s are facts from your research (Research Paper Fact Sheet) – don’t forget to put a citation so you know where you got this source and can correctly cite it in your paper. O Your CM’s will relate your fact (CD) to the topic of your paragraph and your thesis. O An outline IS NOT your complete paper – you will still have to add your topic sentences and concluding sentences when you write your paper. O Your outline sets up for one paragraph per topic, but you may add more paragraphs when needed. O Each body paragraph should be 8 sentences long, that means two Concrete Details (Facts and Citations) and four commentary per paragraph. O We will do an example of your outline together in class…
