Purpose BIM and GIS both play key roles in a facility lifecycle Both systems need to exchange data yet both serve as the repository for key data elements This Project will provide the basis for an information relationship between the two environments and their underlying databases

Work Performed By BIM-GIS Committee

Focus Definition Meetings Discussed potential focus – Many potential scenarios – Many methods for defining Agreed to a Use Case approach Defined facility lifecycle-based use cases – Planning – Design/Construction – Operation – Renovation/Repurpose

BIM-GIS Use Cases - Planning Site Selection/Location planning Site Suitability/Alternatives analysis Site circulation/parking/vehicle routing Permitting/zoning review View Shed analysis Height analysis Airspace encroachments Shadow analysis (solar potential) Temporal Analysis – Historical – Existing – Future Economic Analysis Demographics Soil Conditions Transportation

BIM-GIS Use Cases - Design/Construction Visualization – Building Skins – Textures View Shed analysis Drainage analysis Erosion control analysis Height analysis Airspace encroachments Shadow analysis (solar potential) Security planning Evacuation routing Temporal Analysis – Historical – Existing – Future Source locations of building products (LEED analysis) Emergency Management/Security Total Cost of Ownership/Lifecycle Analysis

BIM-GIS Use Cases - Operation GIS-based Facilities management (maintain 3-D models) MEP/data network routing/analysis Space Management/optimization Move management Asset management Public Safety – Security – Fire protection – Evacuation routing – Hazardous materials storage Way-Finding – Proximity/routing – ADA compliant routes Interior Space analyses – Areas (organizational, operations, leasing, etc.) – Elevation – Volumes Energy Management – Real-time sensor display – Environmental contaminant analysis

GIS-BIM Use Cases – Renovation/Repurpose Existing As-built architectural/structural models Existing As-built MEP/data networks Security planning Evacuation routing

Partial Draft IE Standard Created three subcommittees Operations subcommittee began developing and IDM Work halted in late 2011

Potential Future Directions

Discussion/Next Steps What should our focus be? – BIM -> GIS only? – GIS -> BIM ? – Bi-directional exchange? – Facilities only? – Multiple lifecycle use cases? What problems do we need to solve? – What problems will other efforts solve? – What voids are left by other efforts?
