Session Overview St Mary’s CE High School What is our School and Sixth Form context? Purpose of the programme Curriculum Pathways The PLP Programme Timetable Construction “Be what tomorrow needs”

School Context St Mary’s CE High School “Be what tomorrow needs” Co-Educational, Comprehensive, Church of England Academy Hertfordshire School, but a significant proportion of students reside in North London and therefore travel to school A ‘Good School’ (Ofsted, Jan 2015), An ‘Outstanding Church School’ (Siams, 2015) State of the art provision including a dedicated Sixth Form Centre Small Sixth Form, currently 120 on roll, but population growing, 140 applicants for September 2016

Purpose/Strategic Aims St Mary’s CE High School  Develop personalised and distinctive progression pathways that can meet the needs and aspirations of all students  Provide alternative options for the high population of middle ability students not necessarily thinking about University as the only option post 18  Developing ‘work ready’ students & global citizens that can confidently access the local job market  Address the current Ofsted framework requirements; ‘prepare students for future employment’ ‘high quality impartial careers guidance’ ‘learners are confident and conduct themselves well’  Develop a ‘tailor made’ level 2 programme of study that prepares students for apprenticeships/work  Address funding concerns at post 16, bolster high quality, non-qualification hours “Be what tomorrow needs”

The Professional Learning Placement St Mary’s CE High School “Be what tomorrow needs”

St Mary’s CE High School “Be what tomorrow needs” Why the PLP model? ‘ Schools did not work well enough with employers to provide their students with direct experience of the world of work, which would help to broaden students’ minds about possible future employment. Vocational training and apprenticeships were rarely promoted effectively, especially in schools with sixth forms. The A-level route to universities remained the ‘gold standard’ for young people, their parents and teachers. Students need a programme of learning for working in the professional environment.’ ‘Going in the right direction’ Ofsted 2013

St Mary’s CE High School “Be what tomorrow needs” PLP Rationale  To fill the gap in employability skills observed by those employing young people  To develop credible and sustainable links between learning and employment  Providing students with opportunities to gain first-hand experience of work within a variety of employment sectors  Ensuring students develop up-to-date and relevant skills and competencies needed in today’s labour market  Ensuring that students leave school with experiences that make them more employable

PLP Process Business links – employer handbook Interview students (Induction booklet) skills/ competencies/ career ambitions/ sector of employment Target setting Match student with placement Application process Interview with employer – student feedback St Mary’s CE High School “Be what tomorrow needs”

Programme Logistics  10 week placement 1 day a week  3 blocks if possible per year  Review process – Reflect and Review booklet St Mary’s CE High School “Be what tomorrow needs”

Course validation Model 1  Extended Project Qualification Level 3 A Level  Dependent on types of placement Model 2  BTEC Workskills Level 2 and 3 options (or equivalent) Model 3  No course accompaniment but concentrate on key feature – the competence development St Mary’s CE High School “Be what tomorrow needs”

Timetable Construction St Mary’s CE High School “Be what tomorrow needs” 5 Blocks across the week ‘Day study’, lessons normally period 1&2 and 5&6 Students have one or two ‘non-contact days’ (no timetabled lessons) where PLP’s take place
