Chapter 1: Understanding Health and Wellness “The choices you make today determine your life tomorrow.”

Think of a few habits, activities, and hobbies you have. Put them in one of these three categories: Physical Mental/EmotionalSocial

___________-the combination of physical, mental/emotional, and social well-being. - not just a lack of __________ - it’s dynamic = constantly ___________ ________-the way parts and systems of the body work together ______________-feelings for yourself, how you deal with stress, using/developing your mind ____________-how you get along w/ others, make/keep friends, cooperate, communicate

___________-an overall state of well-being or total health, balancing the three components of health -Health/wellness is ________and moves along a continuum -People live longer today, more medicines cure diseases -Millions of people get sick, disabled, or die each year because of decisions they make and the way they live -Many deaths could be __________if people practiced a few simple health habits _________disease- an ongoing condition or illness such as heart disease, obesity, or cancer

Influences on Your Health __________-all the traits that were biologically passed on to you from you parents ______________-sum total of your surroundings -physical- where you live -social- people around you, peers -cultural- collective beliefs, customs, and behaviors of a group (ethnicity, nationality, religion) ____________-only one you have total control over Attitude, media, and technology also have an influence

_____________________-actions that can potentially threaten your health or the health of others -Behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries and violence -Tobacco use -Unhealthy dietary behaviors -Inadequate physical activity -Alcohol and other drug use -Sexual behaviors that may result in HIV infection, other STD’s, and unintended pregnancies ____________-related risks that increase in effect with each added risk -Can be one act repeated several times (cigarettes, sun) -Can be multiple bad habits (drinking/texting while driving/speeding)

What’s one risk that teenagers take almost every day? Hint: they are 16 or older

____________-taking steps to keep something from happening or getting worse (Dr. checkup) _____________-your actions can affect others _______________-voluntarily choosing not to do something. A deliberate decision to avoid high-risk behaviors, including sexual activity, and the use of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs. _______________-a person’s capacity to learn about and understand basic health information and services, and to use these resources to promote one’s health and wellness.
