Nelson Mandela Nelson Mandela died In December 2013. He was 95 years old. He was one of the most important political figures of the 20th century because through his leadership and personal sacrifice he helped end apartheid in South Africa.

Nelson Mandela In 1948 the apartheid system separated the black majority from the white minority who governed South Africa. Mandela, who was born in 1918 to an African prince, studied law at prestigious universities.

Nelson Mandela Mandela fought against apartheid for many years. In 1962 he was arrested and spent 27 years in prison. During those years, Mandela became the most influential black leader in South Africa.
