Correggio wasn’t born as a Roman town, instead shows a clear medieval origins linked to the Lombard domination. The name appears for the first time in a document of 946. The first document that mentions the "Da Correggio" dates back to 1009, the House that seigniorage continuously over this territory for almost seven centuries.

In 1452, the Emperor Frederick III recognized by Correggio to the title of Counts. Then began the period of about a century, the most fortunate of the city and its Lords. There were guests Ludovico il Moro, I'Ariosto, Torquato Tasso, and many others important artists. The same representatives of local politics and culture were at the highest level: Veronica Gambara, Rinaldo Corso, Claudio Merulo and, above all, Antonio Allegri.

In Correggio underwent a long siege by the troops of the Holy League but failed to take it. In the award lmperatore Ferdinand I in 1559 raised Correggio in the Principality. In 1635 the Duchy of Modena was able to seize the Principality. Since then Correggio has followed the fortunes of the Duchy of Este. In the course of its 700 members were able to give rise to important cultural and educational institutions and to promote a significant building activity in the city. This building fervor continued even in 800. In 1860 Correggio became part of the Kingdom of Italy

Correggio is a small town and comune in the Province of Reggio Emilia, in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, in the Po valley. Correggio had an estimated population of 23,108. Its patron saint is Quirinus of Neuss, to whom the church of San Quirino is dedicated. It was the seat of Veronica Gambara (1485–1550) a noted politician poet who ruled the principality after the death of her husband Giberto X, Count of Correggio, from 1518 to It is the birthplace of the Renaissance painter Antonio Allegri, who was called "il Correggio" from the name of his town. The French poet Tugdual Menon resided in Correggio for much of his life. It is also the birthplace of Venetian School composer Claudio Merulo, the rock singer Luciano Ligabue, the famously disqualified 1908 Summer Olympics marathon runner Dorando Pietri, and the novelist Pier Vittorio Tondelli.

The Province of Reggio Emilia (Italian: Provincia di Reggio Emilia) is one of the nine provinces of the Italian Region of Emilia-Romagna. It has an area of 2,293 km² and a population of 530,343. There are 44 comuni (singular: comune) in the province. Luzzara is the second largest commune in Emilia-Romagna and has the highest number of foreign nationals in the region. The Province is home to the historical Canossa Castle, property of the countess Matilde; it is where the famous Walk to Canossa of Henry IV occurred. Representatives of the free municipalities of Reggio, Modena, Bologna and Ferrara met in Reggio Emilia's Sala del Tricolore in 1797 to proclaim the Repubblica Cispadana, adopting the three colour green-white-red flag to represent their newly formed Republic; it was later adopted in 1848 as the national flag.
