Lenses & Stuff Discuss the various types of lenses used in crime scene photography for 35mm SLR cameras. Different lenses and their utilization. Fixed focus cameras and their place in crime scene photography.

35mm Single lens Reflex (SLR)

Lenses Different Types Different Functions

There are three basic types of lenses Used in Law Enforcement & Crime Scene Photography

There are three basic types of lenses Used in Law Enforcement & Crime Scene Photography Can you name them?

Types of Lenses Wide Angle = 18-35mm <50mm

Types of Lenses Wide Angle = 18-35mm Normal = 50mm

Types of Lenses Wide Angle = 18-35mm Normal = 50mm Telephoto = Greater than 50mm

Lenses can come in many combinations. Often referred to as zoom lenses. Example 18–200mm zoom lens Nikon mm f/ G ED-IF AF-S VR DX Zoom Nikkor Lens Retails between $850 & $1,150

What is beneficial about a 28–80mm zoom lens for a crime scene photographer?

Answer Less need to change lenses when a different focal length is needed. An 18-80mm lens would give you just about any focal length you might use at a crime scene.

What would be a legitimate purpose of a wide angle lens at a crime scene? Isn’t it going to create a slightly distorted view?

Answer A wide-angle lens might be considered for a very small area such as a small bathroom or closet where the entire scene needs to be in view. Yes, there will be distortion, but this should be explained when presenting the photograph as evidence.

Why do we prefer to use the Normal or 50mm lens for most photographs at the crime scene?

The 50mm lens sees exactly what the human eye sees in the same perspective. It creates no distortion in 99% of all cases.

What are some police applications for telephoto lenses?

Main use: Surveillance These lenses need to be 300mm or more to be effective.

Sigma makes a good mm zoom lens that runs around $1, You can make it stronger by inserting a 2x adaptor, but your light intake will be reduced. F-stop will be less.

Sigma mm f/ APO DG OS HSM SLD Ultra Telephoto Zoom Lens Camera Mount

Do fixed focus cameras have a place in crime scene photography? Point and shoot type cameras.

Patrol Officers often carry a camera like this. First photos of any crime scene can come from the first officers on the scene.

Advantage? The scene as it first appeared is preserved. The first officer on the scene will see the crime scene closer to its original condition.
