Target Status 27 th August 2009 Chris Booth The University of Sheffield

Plan & Overview Plan: –Assemble and test two complete target systems –One to go in ISIS –Demonstrator in R k pulses before ISIS operation Reminder of design; overview of received components Assembly progress Current status 2

Key changes –Circular tube lower section –Shorter length with extra dip depth –Balanced vane assembly  5.95/4.55mm Ti gr2 tube Slot & fixings for read-out vane Double flat for anti-rotation  4mm Solid Ti gr2 rod Stop Bearing surfaces Status of Upgraded Shaft 3

Coated Shafts Two shafts back from TecVac with DLC coating CoC from TecVac says we have 4 µm DLC coating Metrology shows one shaft slightly misaligned 200 µm out of true (measured from ends so real effect is less) Decision to use perfect shaft in T1 for ISIS and other for use on T2 in R78 4

Surfaces look OK overall Slight mottling on lower shaft Some machining marks Upper shaft flat region very well polished Lower shaft region showing some mottling Well-polished flat 5

Status of Upgraded Bearings Single piece main section Improved alignment Reduced tolerances/clearances New anti-rotation design Two pairs of bearings coated and ready for assembly Metrology and visual inspection seem fine Bearing hole Removable wedge Rotation stop Dowel & angle faces for location DLC set-up: wedge removed - line of sight to bearing surface 6

Upper bearingLower bearing Again some evidence of minor tooling marks on all bearings but the engineers are happy with finish 7

Status of Upgraded Core Assembly Simpler bolt together design Independent stator assembly Added active packing to top of stator Main body assembly shorter by 41 mm, shaft tube section shorter by 31 mm - gain 10 mm dip depth Stator: independent assembly Bearing extension reducing length of unsupport ed target shaft Compact core with solid bolt together interfaces 8

Status of Upgraded Vane Ruggedized & balanced Individual slots with guard edge Successfully tested in Sheffield with optical block New balanced vane with guarded teeth and slot for reset 9

The Clean room All components laid out prior to assembly First assembly of shaft and bearings in main body 10

Current Status – Target 1 Assembled in clean room – Friday 21 st August Installed in R78 – Saturday 22 nd –Photos – see Ken’s talk Electronics commissioned – Saturday 22 nd 50k actuations completed – Sunday 23 rd –(beautifully quiet running!) Target frame motor tested – Sunday 23 rd Survey of tip position – Monday 24 th Installed in ISIS – Tuesday 25 th –Pumped down; gate-valve opened –Stepper motor tested (minor (software?) issues) – today –LCR electronics check-out – in progress 11

Current Status – Target 2 Assembled in clean room – Sunday 23 rd August Installed in R78 – Tuesday 25 th Electronics commissioned – Wednesday 25 th Revealed some odd effects: –Somewhat noisier than first drive –Significantly less reproducible behaviour T2 Min depth 12

Target 2 - continued Cause? –Electronics? One check still to do. –Mechanical? (“Bent” shaft”) Under investigation now. Will not perform required 400k pulses until understood. Probably open and examine tomorrow. Limit switches etc still to be fitted to second frame. Some issues with stability of DL VME control crate. 13

Conclusion First target tested & installed in ISIS. Infrastructure tested. A few actuations performed. Almost ready to go. Second target has a few issues. Hope these can be resolved over next days, but this is not guaranteed. 14
