Remember Colonization has taken a heavy toll on FNs:  Sad Stats -education, income, life expectancy, suicides, housing, employability, addictions etc. etc. -Healing Foundation -Friendship Centres designed to help designed to help

Changes in Education Pre 1950s: -Residential Schools s: -FNs integrated into public schools -huge failure  lack of trust  racist curriculum ***Savage common term to describe FNs in textbooks***

Changes in Education 1970s 1972 “Indian Control of Indian Education” (Native Brotherhood Report) Recommendations of the report: -Aboriginal education philosophy in curriculum -educational goals for aboriginal students -culturally relevant programming -increased parent involvement Results: -increased funding for BAND operated schools

Changes in Education 1980s 1987 Sullivan Report -report on public education in Canada -heavily criticizes govt. for failure to educate FNs Recommendations + Results: -create culturally relevant / local curriculum -new branch of gov’t created:  Ministry of Aboriginal Education BC 1 st Nations 12 Eng.
