Ryan Giggs VS Twitter....

Ryan Giggs vs Twitter.... In May 2011, it was reported in non-UK media sources that Giggs was the identity of CTB in CTB v News Group Newspapers,a footballer who had obtained an anonymised gagging order in relation to an alleged extra-marital affair with model Imogen Thomas. Giggs took legal action against the social networking site Twitter after he was named by a user in a list of identities of individuals who had allegedly taken out so-called "super-injunctions "

European Convention on Human Rights (1950)- Section 8: Privacy Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights provides a right to respect for one's "private and family life, his home and his correspondence”. This is subject to certain restrictions that are "in accordance with law" and "necessary in a democratic society".

Silent debate ( Sheets around the room) Should celebrities be entitled to the same privacy as your average citizen? Twitter gives the public more freedom of speech. Ryan Giggs only sued twitter because he was mad that his wife found out about his affair Twitter users should respect laws and injunctions People who ‘tweeted ‘ about Ryan Giggs and his affair took a big risk as they could have been send to prison... The MP only named Ryan Giggs in parliament to get support for his party...

Plenary... Paired question... Why do MP’s use Twitter. Give 2 clear reasons and explain your answers ( 4marks)
