Frequently Asked Questions 1. What is Mandatory Connection? Mandatory connection of homes within 500’ of water and/or sewer service lines For variety of reasons, you were not connected to lines. Mandatory connection resolves situation. Fairness to all. Central services are provided. Many benefits. Water of high quality. Several awards from NC. Safe, reliable handling of sewage General move from septic for environmental benefit Treated effluent (better than received) Increased property values

Frequently Asked Questions 1. What is Mandatory Connection? Process used by cities, counties, authorities Pays for construction, maintenance of infrastructure Allows costs to be spread over larger group, making them more affordable overall Enables extension of essential services to more areas

Frequently Asked Questions 2. Could I be exempt from this process? Yes, if a structure is more than 500’ from water meter or sewer main. If less than 500’ away, Connection Deferral applications are available: 3-year term with optional 3-year extension Permit approval by New Hanover County Must apply within 60 days of start of mandatory connection process

3. Can I defer my connection? Charges/fees for water customers : (if applicable): Residential System Development Charge: $ 1,920 Residential Water Connection Fee (if applicable):$ 1,850 Meter Set Fee (if applicable):$ 250 New Customer Service Fee (if applicable): $ 55 Total (if all fees apply):$ 4,075 Additional costs for the private plumbing from the home to the water meter will be paid by the homeowner. *CFPUA staff will have fee sheet for your specific property

Charges/fees for sewer customers (if applicable): Could be lower, depending on origin of infrastructure (after 1984) Residential System Development Charge: $ 2,460 Residential Sewer Connection Fee: $ 2,200 New Customer Service Fee:$ 55 Total:$ 4,715 Additional costs for the private plumbing from the home to the sewer tap will be paid by the homeowner. *CFPUA staff will have a fee sheet for your specific property

What is the connection deadline? 180 days from the start of the process Begins when packets are sent Certified Mail Packets contain all of the necessary information for connection, including fee sheet and deferral process info. Connection deferral deadline is different 60 days from the start of the process
