KINDS OF TENSES

Verb form that shows the time of action is called the tense. I am present We are the future. I am past.

SIMPLE PRESENT Fishes live in water.Ravi went to Ocean park yesterday. SIMPLE PAST I will celebrate my birthday tomorrow SIMPLE FUTURE

To express an action that is going on at the time of speaking Rita is playing foot ball. Mary is cleaning vessels.

To express an action which was taking place at some particular moment in the past. He was cooking chicken when the guests arrived.

To express an action that is in progress at a given future time. When I get back home, we will be going for a party.

To express an action that began in the past and which was completed by the time of speaking. Tony has cut some green vegetables. The bird has flown away with the baby.

To express that some action had taken place before another was begun or completed. The bus had left before Lata reached the stop.

To express an action that will be completed before a particular time in future. Rahul will have reached office by this time.

The baby has been playing in the tub for two hours. Mohan has been attending to the phone since morning.

When I reached home, Kamal had been studying since morning.

By 12 o’clock, mother will have been cooking for two hours.
