Eligibility Requirements Two or More UW–Madison Graduate Student and/or Postdoctoral Research Collaborators –At least one of whom has attended one or more of the following events: WARF Discovery Challenge Research Symposium (April 9, 2015) Discovery Challenge Networking Happy Hour (June 25, 2015, or July 23, 2015) Coffee and Conversation (Date TBD in August) –Representing two or more departments on campus 2

Application Details 3 Collaborator Contact Information Biographical Summary of Collaborators (1,000 characters): –Current Department and PI –Relevant Experience –How and Why Collaboration Started Letter of Support from PI Budget Timeline Research Plan Proposal

Biographical Summary of Collaborators Include the following: 1) Current department and principal investigator. 2) Relevant experience that will be used in the completion of this project. 3) How and why did the collaboration start? (Briefly describe each collaborator’s contribution) (1,000 character limit, including spaces) 4

Research Plan Proposal Include the following: 1) Background (1,000 character limit, including spaces) Provide a brief, non-technical background essential for understanding the proposed project and a description of the collaboration that has been formed. 2) Significance (750 character limit, including spaces) How will this project address an important problem or barrier in your field? 3) Innovation and Collaboration (750 character limit, including spaces) a. How is your proposed project novel? b. How are you combining your different disciplines in a new way to solve a research problem? 5

Briefly explain your methodology in a format readable by a non-expert scientist. Only details directly applicable to the collaboration need to be mentioned. b. Address how you can accomplish the proposed research within the budget and time provided. c. Describe the work allocated to each collaborator. d. Briefly explain potential problems or pitfalls. 5) Environment (1,000 character limit, including spaces) a. Outline equipment/facilities needed to complete the research and show your lab owns or has access to required equipment. b. Show that experiments are feasible to complete within the $7,500 budget or that additional resources are available. c. Explain how your collaboration is necessary for the success of the project. 6
