National Board Certified Teachers 19 Educators who are working in the areas of Early Childhood Special Education might also want to consider certification within the area of Exceptional Needs/Specialist, which include Early Childhood (birth to 8 years), Mild and Moderately Impaired (5 to 21+ years) Severe and Multiply Impaired (5 to 21+ years), Visually Impaired (birth to 21+ years), and Deaf/Hard of Hearing (birth to 21 + years).

National Board Certified Teachers 20 The Portfolio: Early Childhood/Generalist NBPTS requires that Early childhood candidates have access to a class of at least 6 students, with at least 51% of the students in the class are between the ages of 3 and 8. The portfolio of the Early Childhood/Generalist provides educators with the opportunity to present a sample of their actual classroom practice over a specified time frame.

National Board Certified Teachers 22 In all four classroom-based entries, teachers are required to write a detailed analysis of the teaching reflected in the videotape or student work. While a descriptive narrative is required, the candidate is also expected to write a reflective analysis of the teaching practice

National Board Certified Teachers 23 Documentation of the entries must include verification by colleagues, supervisors, principals, etc., is required. And the candidate must document their work outside the classroom with families and the larger community and with colleagues and the larger profession.

National Board Certified Teachers 24 Introduction to Your Classroom Community -- Teachers are asked to show how they structure their time, establish rules and routines and organize space and materials in ways that promote children's social development, mutual respect and emerging independence. Teachers submit a videotape that focuses on their interaction with children accompanied by a commentary.

National Board Certified Teachers 25 Reflecting on a Teaching and Learning Sequence -- Teachers submit a written commentary and supporting artifacts which show how they nurture children's growth and learning as they explore an extended theme or topic drawn from at least two content areas -- social studies and the arts.

National Board Certified Teachers 26 Engaging Children in Science Learning -- Teachers are asked to feature a learning experience that engages children in the investigation of a science concept. Central to teachers' written responses is a detailed examination of a learning experience they videotape. They are also asked to describe how this learning experience is embedded within an ongoing series of activities designed to promote children's understanding of science concepts and processes. Teachers submit a videotape and a written commentary.

National Board Certified Teachers 27 Examining a Child's Literacy Development -- Teachers are asked to present the ways in which they foster literacy development in their classroom. They are also asked to analyze selected work samples from one child, and discuss the steps they would take to support the featured child's literacy development. Teachers submit a written commentary and the work samples from the selected child.

National Board Certified Teachers 28 Documented Accomplishments -- Candidates document their work outside the classroom, with families and in the profession. In addition, candidates compose two brief interpretative summaries of their accomplishments,one for accomplishments with families and the community and the other for accomplishments in the profession.

National Board Certified Teachers 46 Louisiana Candidate Subsidy Program The Louisiana Department of Education will utilize NBPTS Candidate Subsidy funds to support 42 candidates at 50% of the $2300 certification fee AND will subsidize the remainder of the certification fee for the 42 candidates using 8(g) funds allocated by the State Board Elementary and Secondary Education (SBESE). Candidates will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis. Candidates must meet NBPTS eligibility guidelines. Teachers interested in using candidate subsidy funds to help with the fee MUST submit their NBC application through the program administrator.
