Today  Unit 6 vocab: workbook/quiz  Begin reading when finished with quiz  Discuss p What is your essence quote? Why? Figurative language?  NOTES: letter format  Write letter to childhood self  HOMEWORK: finish reading p of Mango St. if not done in class

The House on Mango Street Discussion (p ) What is your essence quote? Why’d you pick it? Figurative language?  Laughter (p. 17)  Gil’s Furniture… (p. 19)  Meme Ortiz (p. 21)  Louie, His Cousin… (p. 23)  Marin (p. 26)  Those Who Don’t (p. 28)  Old Woman (p. 29)  Alicia Who Sees Mice (p. 31)  Darius & the Clouds (p. 33)

Write a Letter to Childhood Self  Pick a “you” from the past to write to. [Think of a time when you needed guidance or to hear good news or just write to you from a random time period.]  Write a letter that is at least 3 paragraphs long to your former self. [begin “Dear eight-year-old Kevin,”] Your first paragraph could tell your former self how/what you are doing as a freshman in high school. Your second paragraph could offer some sort of advice or warning. Your final paragraph could offer some sort of motivation to tackle something that is on the horizon. These are all just suggestions, and you have freedom to write about something else – just ask me first to be safe.  Your letter must include at least TWO underlined examples of figurative language and be properly formatted
