REVIEW Performance (Authentic) Assessments

Goes Beyond Testing Students must show they've gained certain knowledge and skills Usually focused on the process used to arrive at the product or outcome as well as the product or outcome itself Provides a more complete picture of student achievement

Three Components 1. Task: designed to assess students knowledge in a new situation 2. Format: how you want the assessment to be completed 3. Rubric: predetermined written criteria

The How-To

Performance Assessment Examples Create a game. Write an article for the school newspaper or local newspaper. Write a research paper. Propose and support a way to solve a problem. Design a museum exhibit. Rewrite an ending to your favorite story or to a story that's been read in class. Create a classification system for a group of objects. Identify a variety of solutions for a problem. Write a review for a school or local play or concert. Write the "other side of a story" from the villain's perspective.

Examples Continued Model building Measurement taking Oral reports Written report Lab report Debates Portfolios Science notebook/journals Student talk Active listening Concept maps Open-ended questions

Rubric Does it assess what you think it assesses? Does it really reflect what the students were actually doing? Is it fair and is it doable? Do the students know about it ahead of time?
