Tuesday – March 10, 2015 Mr. Lombardi Do Now: 1.Analyze the cartoon above (what do you see? What does each image represent? What is the overall meaning of the cartoon?) 2.Create definitions for “Democracy” and “Communism” (in your own words). Aim: How do Eastern Communism & Western Democracies differ?

The Cold War Begins US & USSR are the only remaining superpowers after WWII. Tensions, rivalries, competitions, and fears developed. US = Democracy; USSR = Communism Neither nation was eager to be involved in another war; MAD (mutually assured destruction)

Domain-Specific Vocabulary 1.Democracy: A system of government in which the citizens hold the legislative, judicial, and executive power, based on majority rule. 2.Communism: A system of government in which a single totalitarian party holds power. It is characterized by state-control of the economy and restriction on personal freedoms.

Analyze Source A: 1.Who is speaking? What is the speaker talking about? 2.What is the speaker’s opinion on the subject?

Excerpt of a Speech by President Truman: Communism is based on the belief that man is so weak and inadequate that he is unable to govern himself, and therefore requires the rule of strong masters. Democracy is based on the conviction that man has the moral and intellectual capacity, as well as the inalienable right, to govern himself with reason and justice. Communism subjects the individual to arrest without lawful cause, punishment without trial, and forced labor as the chattel of the State. It decrees what information he shall receive, what art he shall produce, what leaders he shall follow, and what thoughts he shall think. Democracy maintains that government is established for the benefit of the individual, and is charged with the responsibility of protecting the rights of the individual and his freedom in the exercise of those abilities of his. Communism maintains that social wrongs can be corrected only by violence. Democracy has proved that social justice can be achieved through peaceful change. List 3 ways in which Communism and Democracy are different.
