Steps to Balancing a Chemical Equation: 1.Delay the balancing of elements such as hydrogen and oxygen until the end. 2.If the same polyatomic ions appear in both sides of the equation, treat them as single units, like monatomic ions. 3.After considering tips 1 & 2…balance the elements from left to right.

Steps to Balancing a Chemical Equation: 4. Count the number of atoms of each element of both sides of the equation. 5. Determine which atoms are not balanced. 6. Balance one atom at a time using coefficients in front of one or more of the chemicals. 7. Remember, that balancing one element may unbalance others. 8. For ionic equations, make sure the charges are balanced.
