Introduction Prevention can be defined as preventing either the onset or the progress of a disease, or restoring function lost due to disease.

Preventive dentistry is a philosophy and modern way of oral health care that includes all phases of dentistry. It includes not only the prevention of dental caries and periodontal diseases through the use of proper diet, home care, and regular dental examinations, but it also includes proper restoration and replacement of teeth, root canal treatment, orthodontic braces, and even the surgical removal of teeth to prevent the spread of infection. Also of great importance in preventive dentistry is the discovery of other oral diseases, such as cancer, through soft tissue examinations.

Historical Aspect of Preventive Dental Care Dr. Alfred C. Fones, is the founder of dental hygiene and preventive dentistry in 1916, he stated that hundreds of millions of dollars are spent to restore the sick to health, But only a relatively small portion of this amount is spent to maintain the health of people, Even though it is definitely known that the most common physical defects and illnesses are preventable. Hence the concept ‘Prevention is Better than Cure’’ became popular.

Why is preventive dentistry necessary? Through the years, the incidence of oral disease has increased, and the people have become more susceptible to dental disease than they were in the past. According to the finding of the study published in Saudi Med J 2013; Vol. 34 (7): 744-749.... Saudi young population has high level of dental problems. More than 50% of the overall population suffer from periodontal problems.
