“Boolean Logic?” George Boole ( ) Mathematician who studied logic Let’s do some research !

What is “Boolean?” Boolean logic refers to the logical relationships between search terms: poverty AND crime cigarettes OR tobacco steroids NOT prescription drugs

Using Boolean Logic Use Boolean logic to access online information efficiently and effectively Three “Boolean operators”: AND ORNOT

AND AND limits results Example: poverty AND crime Computer program will retrieve only the articles that contain both keywords

OR OR is an expander (“Or means More”) Example: cigarettes OR tobacco Computer program will retrieve every article that contains either keyword

NOT NOT is a limiter Example: steroids NOT prescription drugs Computer program will retrieve only articles that contain the word “steroids”

“QUOTATION MARKS” Quotation marks are limiters Example: “illegal alien” Results would only include pages that contain that exact phrase

*ASTERIK* Shorten a word and add an * to the end. Example: regulat* Results will include words that begin with regulat… regulate regulation regulatory

Starting Your Search Process What are your keywords? Pull essential words out of your research question Add Boolean operators Use AND, OR, and NOT to develop your search “string” Are there any alternative keywords? What are the synonyms for your keywords? Endemic-terms unique to your controversy

Step 1: Keywords How is consumerism beneficial to America? Keywords consumerism beneficial America

Step 2: Synonyms How is consumerism beneficial to America? Synonyms “goods and services” trade ?

Step 2: Synonyms How is consumerism beneficial to America? Synonyms advantageous profitable ?

Step 2: Synonyms How is consumerism beneficial to America? Synonyms U.S. “United States” ?

Step 4: Re-Search your Research consumerism AND beneficial AND America “good and services” AND beneficial AND America trade AND beneficial AND America consumerism AND advantageous AND America consumerism AND profitable AND America consumerism AND beneficial AND U.S. consumerism AND beneficial AND “United States”
