Presentation transcript:

 Take out any signed paperwork you didn’t turn in yesterday.  Read through the Duke University Honor Code at your tables.

1. Take out your signed syllabus slip and parent contact form. 2. Brainstorm: What is Science? (Make a Circle map at your table.)

 The study of the natural world.  Based on Observations and FACTS  CHANGING!  Inquiry- an examination of a matter in a search for information or truth.  Scientists conduct inquiries using the SCIENTIFIC METHOD.

 Take out your Honor Code paper from yesterday. On the Duke University side, brainstorm 3 “I will…” statements to add to OUR honor code.

1. Homework on your desk.  Lab Safety Contract  Website Scavenger Hunt  Paperwork you forgot yesterday. 2. On the ¼ Sheet of Paper- Write out instructions for how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

The Scientific Method is a series of steps that are used to investigate a natural occurrence.

 What do you want to know or explain?  Written as a TESTABLE QUESTION!

 Make observations and research your topic of interest.  What do we need to know to understand the results?

 An educated guess or informed prediction that answers the question.

 A set of procedures designed and carried out in order to answer the question.  Include materials  Outcome must be measurable (quantifiable).

 Control  Control: what you compare results to  Constants  Constants: stay the same.  Variable:  Variable: Changes  Independent Variable  Independent Variable: What YOU change in an experiment.  ONLY ONE!!!!  Dependent Variable  Dependent Variable: what you MEASURE

The hypothesis is an educated guess about the relationship between the independent and dependent variables.

 Gather and interpret data.  Include tables, graphs, and photographs.  What do the results mean?

1. Restate the Question 2. Restate the Hypothesis Was it SUPPORTED or NOT SUPPORTED? 3. State the Results 4. Explain the Results- answer the question!

Exit Ticket What is a control and why do we need one?

Exit Ticket List the steps of the scientific method.

 Why can there only be one independent variable in an experiment?

 List three types of data you can collect in an experiment. (Example: Height)

 List the 6 steps of the scientific method in order.

Questions, Research, Hypothesis, Experiment, Analysis and Conclusion.

 True or False: There are multiple versions of the scientific method.

TRUE

 True or False: You can repeat steps of the scientific method as needed.

TRUE

 What is a control?

The standard for comparison in an experiment.

 What is a dependent variable?

It’s the variable you measure in an experiment.
