CERN Summerschool 2007 Monitor and Control of the CANbus power supplies of ATLAS’ MDTs Wilco Koppert (UU)

Introduction ATLAS Goals –The Higgs Boson –Technicolour –Broken Super-Symmetry –CP violation ATLAS components

Monitored Drift Tubes (1) Layout Why Muon’s ? - H -> Z Z*->µ - µ + µ - µ +

Monitored Drift Tubes (2) Why Monitor Drift Tubes ? - Corrosion - Other problems How to Monitor the Drift Tubes - Sensors - Reading Out Currents and Voltages of the PSU’s

The Hardware PSU’s (Power Supply Units) ELMBs (Embedded Local Monitor Board) Temperature and B-field sensors CANbus (Controller Area Network bus) OPC Server

The Software PVSS 3.6 (SCADA system) JCOP framework

The Project “Develop a Program That Allows Monitoring and Controlling of the PSUs of the Monitored Drift Tubes at ATLAS” More specific: - Install the PSU component of the framework on the USA-15 computer - Monitor voltages and currents of the PSUs and archive the data in a file - Make an alarm function that alerts when the voltages/currents overreach certain values -Make a plot function that is able to show the monitored voltages/currents in time -Make a function to switch PSUs on/off separately and all (in the same Crate = 16 PSUs) at the same time -Make it all clear to see in one view and easy to use

The Results

Things that need to be done The current/voltage values have to be logged for a long time to look for the best warning values. The plotting tool could be more clear with a better layout when the next PVSS version if available. Have a nice interpretation of the values and see how they react when for example the cooling is turned off or within a few years when radiation is present. Add some piece off code to let our program know when the PSU’s are switched off manually or by a power cut and fix an initialization bug (probably some framework bug).

Evaluation The Goals have been reached Found some bugs in the framework and PVSS Struggled with installing the framework The program is still running and logging data by this time

Questions???
