Common Unnecessary Errors (1) Yes! -Must wait -Should wait -Shall wait -Can wait -Could wait -Will wait -Would wait -Do wait -Does wait No! -Must waited -Should waited -Shall waited -Can waited -Could waited -Will waited -Would waited -Do waited -Does wait

How can I stop these errors? By being alert when you write! By being aware of the kind of errors YOU tend to make and looking out for them. By making it a habit to keep the last 5 minutes at least to edit/ check your writing.

In the Context of Formal Writing, You Really Should Know These! When we have a singular subject (she), the verb that comes after must have an ‘s’ She knows that I enjoy a good movie. The doctor understands the need to be patient. ( Subject) When we have a plural subject (boys), the verb that comes after does not have an ‘s’ The boys know that they have been nominated for their good work. Doctors understand the need to be patient

You try these: * He take/ takes good care of his mother. * Han Choon make/ makes it a point to call home when he is late. * My father manage/ manages the stall by himself. “This is what we mean by Subject-Verb Agreement.”

Common Unnecessary Errors (2) No! -Had make -Have make -Had make -Is make -Are make -Am make Yes! -Had made -Have made -Had made -Is made -Are made -Am made The verb that comes after *had, have, had, is, are & am* must be in the past participle form.

Common Unnecessary Errors (3) No! -Alot -Infront -More worse -More angrier -More better ‘angrier’ is already a state that is more than ‘angry’ so you do not need ‘more’ Yes! -A lot -In front -Worse -Angrier -Better -Although…but -me and my friends - i -Although…,… -My friends and I -I “For these you have to learn them up. Do it once ; do it twice & it becomes automatic.”

These are Incomplete Sentences or Fragmented Sentences. As I walked home. Before he could retaliate. After all the rain water has been drained away. If I am well-behaved When I decided to attend. The old man who lived down the road. If you read these outloud, you will ‘hear’ that the meaning is incomplete. In the first example, we should have ‘As I walked home, I bumped into an old friend.’

Singlish I anyhow do. I also can. You every time make me angry On that time, I was in a state of shock. I did it without much planning I can also do it You always make me angry At that time, I was in a state of shock. “Learn to SPEAK better so that it does not interfere with your WRITTEN ENGLISH.”
