1a Read and understand Read about an organization in Canada that tries to help the homeless. Then Discuss this question: What can be done to help homeless people. A famous program in Edmonton has helped homeless people for many years. It is called Edmonton Community Services. It is famous because it has been so successful in helping homeless people return to normal lives. Edmonton Community Services helps people to get jobs. It also lend money to them so that they can rent apartments and buy clothes for their children.

1a Read and understand A special program for street kids, called “Kids in the Hall”, helps homeless children like Zack. “In the Hall” is the name of a restaurant in Edmonton. The food is prepared, cooked and served by street kids. At the same time, they are learning restaurant skills there. When they finish their training, it will be easy for them to find jobs. However, street kids must obey strict rules. If anyone takes drugs or disobeys the other rules, he can’t stay in the programs. He has to return to the streets. Zack thinks that these rules are strict. But he says, ”The program ‘Kids in the Hall’ has given me a good chance to succeed. It will help me live like other kids again.
