Presentation transcript:

IAFF Always on the Front Line 1. Identify the purpose of medical surveillance. 3. Relate incident location to type and quantity of hazardous materials present. 4. Apply knowledge of container shape and size to predict products carried in highway and rail tanks. 5. Use the NFPA 704M, HMIS, DOT, and military marking systems to identify the presence of hazardous materials. 6. Use the Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG) to identify hazardous materials. UNIT 2: Recognizing Hazardous Materials Key Learning Goals : 2. Identify the five basic hazardous materials identification clues.

IAFF Always on the Front Line A commitment to your health ensures: Less risk of death, injury, or disabling disease Improved physical performance Decreased stress, tension, and anxiety Enhanced rest and sleep Increased ability to bounce back from strenuous events Pay daily attention to remaining as healthy as possible; reap the benefits in performance. Key components of a proactive health strategy are: Medical review Fitness Stress management Nutrition Physical fitness is critical to your ability to perform safely and effectively as an emergency responder.

IAFF Always on the Front Line Medical surveillance is a program of collecting and interpreting health data. It is required by law. The Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) standard, 29 CFR The National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) NFPA 1500: Standard on Fire Department Occupational Safety and Health Programs addresses the health and safety of fire fighters and emergency medical care providers. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations provide additional protection for workers who are not covered by OSHA. What is medical surveillance?

IAFF Always on the Front Line Your health assessments are based on: Diagnostic medical testing Biological monitoring Questionnaire data Physical exams... to detect early changes in health status so permanent health effects can be prevented. What is the purpose of medical surveillance...? CFR cites these conditions when fire fighters must be provided with a medical surveillance program: When they operate as members of a HazMat Team. When exposed to hazardous substances for 30 or more days per year at, or above, exposure limits set by OSHA. When injured due to an exposure at an emergency incident involving hazardous substances. Your physician needs the following information: A copy of 29 CFR Your job duties Previous exposures PPE used

IAFF Always on the Front Line 2. Occupancy and Location 3. Container Shapes and Sizes 5. Shipping Papers and Facility Documents 4. Marking Systems What are the five basic clues used to recognize the presence of hazardous materials? 1.Dispatch Information

IAFF Always on the Front Line What hazards might be present at these locations? Anhydrous ammonia Fuel oil Diesel fuel Arsenic Black powder Hydrochloric acid Ammonium nitrate

IAFF Always on the Front Line Container Shapes and Sizes What types of hazardous materials might be shipped in this tanker? Liquid nitrogen or liquid oxygen What hazardous materials might be carried in this tanker? Mild corrosives, poisons, combustible or flammable liquids Most hazardous materials are shipped by……… Highway

IAFF Always on the Front Line Container Shapes and Sizes Identify the type of rail car. Pressure rail car What might it carry? Liquefied Gasses, Chlorine, Ammonia What kind of tank is this? Pressure highway carrier What hazardous substance could be found in commercial fixed sites, non-structural locations, residences and in transport? Gasoline

IAFF Always on the Front Line What are three types of products this non-pressure highway carrier might be carrying? Gasoline Fuel oil Jet fuels What types of products might this non-pressure railroad tank car be carrying? Flammable liquids Oxidizers Organic peroxides Poisons Corrosive liquids Non-hazardous materials Shipping Containers

IAFF Always on the Front Line You are called to a traffic incident that involves hazardous material containers. The labels on the containers have been almost entirely burned off. Identify each of the nine classes of the DOT marking system by its color. Class 1: Explosives Class 3: Flammable & Combustible Liquids Class 9: Miscellaneous Dangerous Materials Class 6: Poisons Class 5: Oxidizers & Organic Peroxides Class 4: Flammable Solids, Spontaneously Combustible & Dangerous When Wet Materials Class 7: Radioactive Materials Class 2: Gases Class 8: Corrosive Materials DOT Marking System

IAFF Always on the Front Line The NFPA marking system (detailed in NFPA 704) uses a diamond divided into color-coded quadrants. What hazards are indicated by the different colors in each quadrant? Flammability Hazards - Red Reactivity Hazards - Yellow Special Hazards - White Health Hazards - Blue TRUE OR FALSE: The health, flammability, and reactivity hazards are ranked from 0 to 4, with 0 indicating no risk and 4 indicating the greatest risk. NFPA Marking System

IAFF Always on the Front Line Resources This document is designed for use in transportation incidents and provides information on common hazardous materials.
