What Is an Epidemiologist? Epidemiology is a fairly new discipline. Epidemiologists investigate and describe the determinants and distribution of disease, disability, and other health outcomes and develop the means for prevention and control. Epidemiologists look at medical, social, environmental and economic factors when determining the causes of problems.

Duties of an Epidemiologist Research data. Analyze data and record relevant information into a database. Share data with other workers and obtain relevant data from other workers. Read reports, articles and other statistical information. Consult with people on the phone or in person regarding their research. Write reports, papers and articles.

Becoming an Epidemiologist An ideal epidemiologist must possess an inquisitive mind and be able to interpret statistical data. They must also be hard workers, organized and able to pay attention to detail. Ability to stand for long periods of time Ability to work with people in various physical conditions Excellent eyesight for viewing samples and making diagnoses Good hand-eye coordination for biopsy procedures and handling laboratory equipment

Education To become an epidemiologist, a masters degree in either epidemiology or health statistics is required. A PhD is not required, although many people find it helpful when looking at advanced supervisory positions. Students must take classes in high school that pertain to sciences such as biology, chemistry, physics, and math to the highest degree possible. Employment Salaries for an epidemiologist can range significantly depending on where one is employed. The average salary for epidemiologist working in state government is $48,640. Epidemiologists are employed by public health, government and environmental agencies, hospitals and some private research organizations. Those who are specialized and can teach epidemiology may be employed at universities. There are many opportunities for growth in the epidemiology field.
