Western Australia Stroke Services Study Day Inform me, enable me: delivering stronger stroke care and recovery

Who we are The National Stroke Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation that works with stroke survivors, carers, health professionals, government and the public to reduce the impact of stroke on the Australian Community. We aim to stop stroke, save lives and end suffering. We are a non-federated national NGO providing services and support around Australia with offices in (WA,TAS,QLD,NSW). We are the ‘voice of stroke’ in Australia.

Why are we needed Stroke is one of Australia’s biggest killers after coronary heart disease and a leading cause of disability. (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare Australia’s Health 2014.) In 2014, there were 51,000 new and recurrent strokes across Australia (4,700 in WA) and 440,000 people living with the effects of stroke (41,000 in WA) (Deloitte Access Economics - Stroke In Australia – No postcode untouched. 2014) Two thirds of these people have a disability resulting from their stroke. What we do to help The NSF is committed to: Raising awareness of the risk factors and signs of stroke and promoting healthy lifestyles. (FAST, StrokeSafe Ambassadors) Improving treatment in hospital and rehabilitation care in order to save lives and reduce disability. (Audits, Clinical Guidelines, Inform Me) Improving life after stroke for stroke survivors. (Support Groups, Strokeline, Enableme, Resources)

What we do to help Encouraging and facilitating stroke research. Advocating for improved stroke prevention, treatment and support. Raising funds from the community, corporate sector and government to continue our mission. This work is supported in WA by an Executive Officer, Community Engagement Coordinator and volunteers.
