 GW supported the original ideas of the French Revolution but didn’t officially give US support  GW began to question the French Revolution as it became more violent

 Washington’s uses executive power to declare America’s neutrality in the war between France and Great Britain  Jefferson disagrees and thinks GW should have consulted Congress

 Frenchman came to America to recruit privateers for the war against Great Britain and Spain  Didn’t got to Philadelphia and did not get the permission of US government  Washington, Hamilton, and Jefferson all furious as it threatened our neutrality

 Hamilton encourages GW to send John Jay to Great Britain to settle disputes (forts, impressment, aiding Native Americans, etc.)  Federalists wanted peace, Republicans wanted Embargo  Treaty gives us complete control of Northwest and creates some trade agreements- no acknowledgement of impressment

 Really unpopular in parts of the country- viewed as a sell out  Barely passed in the Senate- Republicans use this politically  Jay burned in effigy

 Spanish worried about secret alliance with British  South wants access to Mississippi and protection in Florida  Treaty gives us access to Mississipi River and New Orleans and a good border of Florida  This Treaty is awesome and popular!

 Sent Mad Anthony Wayne to defeat Blue Jacket at Fallen Timbers (1794)  Signed Treaties with Native Americans (Greenville)  Viewed tribes as sovereign but America superior
