History Founded in 1918, the American Council on Education (ACE) is the only higher education organization that represents presidents and chancellors of all types of U.S. accredited, degree-granting institutions: community colleges and four-year institutions, private and public universities, and nonprofit and for-profit colleges. ACE represents the interests of more than 1,600 campus executives, as well as 200 leaders of higher education- related associations and organizations. Together, ACE member institutions serve 80 percent of today's college students. Source: America Council on Education

Purpose In its role as the major coordinating body for all the nation's higher education institutions, ACE provides leadership on key higher education issues and influences public policy through advocacy, research, and program initiatives. ACE fosters greater collaboration and new partnerships within and outside the higher education community to help colleges and universities anticipate and address the challenges of the 21st century and contribute to a stronger nation and better world. News Room The Office of Public Affairs at the American Council on Education is responsible for implementing a comprehensive outreach program to enhance public understanding of a wide range of higher education issues, government policies affecting colleges and universities, and the specific activities of ACE. Public Affairs staff work with the news media daily on a variety of higher education topics, as well as disseminate news and information about ACE programs and events. Staff also work with the public, policy makers, and anyone interested in furthering their knowledge about higher education. Source: America Council on Education

Government Relations For federal government policy makers, the division acts as the central source of information and counsel on higher education issues. Division staff members also communicate information on relevant educational concerns and ACE policy positions to the media, college and university officials, and the general public. Programs & Services ACE, the major coordinating body for all of the nation's higher education institutions, seeks to provide leadership and a unifying voice on higher education issues and to influence public policy through advocacy, research, and program initiatives. Membership ACE is the most visible and influential higher education association in the nation. ACE's member institutions represent 80 percent of all full-time students, positioning the Council at the center of federal policy debates concerning legislation that affects campuses across the country. ACE offers two opportunities to join—as members and as associates. Members include accredited, degree-granting institutions, systems, and national and regional higher education associations. Associates are branch campuses, corporations, executive search firms, foundations, and international organizations and institutions that are concerned with higher education and meet all eligibility criteria.
