Storming the Winter Palace EjDNdn_cjc (4 minutes) – 1917 Revolution: Bloodshed Begins “The Provisional Government had shrunk to a meeting of ministers in the Winter Palace. It was not overthrown by a mass attack on the Winter Palace. A few Red Guards climbed in through the servants’ entrance, found the Provisional Government in a meeting and arrested the ministers in the name of the people. Six people, five of them Red Guards, were casualties of bad shooting by their own comrades. [A.J.P. Taylor, a British historian, writing in his book Revolutions and Revolutionaries, which was published in 1980]

Why were the Bolsheviks stronger in October than they were in February of 1917?

Why were the Bolsheviks in a stronger position in October 1917, than they had been in Feb 1917? (Use pages of WJEC) Membership had grown from 24,000 in February 1917 to 340,000 by October 1917! This is due to some of the following: 1) Promises made to the population “Peace, Bread and Land.” 2) The party used propaganda to win support and published their own newspaper (Pravda) to attack the government. 3) The Bolsheviks are now armed and seen by many as heroes after crushing Kornilov revolt 4) Bolsheviks secured a majority in the Petrograd Soviet, and increased their representation in the Moscow Soviet and in the soviets in other cities.

An important note about the dates! Russia in 1917 still used the Julian Calendar, which is 13 days behind the Gregorian (modern) calendar. Your text and I will use the Julian Calendar (which was in place until the Bolsheviks adopted the Gregorian Calendar in Feb Therefore the events of the Revolution which took place on October 24/25 of the Julian Calendar, occurred on the 6/7 of November if using the modern calendar! Simultaneously the events that took place between 23/27 of February, is referred to as the March Revolution if using the Gregorian Calendar! ______________________________________________________________________________ To understand the issues surrounding control of Russia between Feb /March and Oct /Nov 1917.
