Presentation transcript:

The Chemistry Lab

Erlenmeyer Flask Function: Used for the mixing of chemicals. Big base leads to stability. Narrow neck prevents splashs. Not a precise measuring instrument.

Florence Flask Function: The round-bottom with thick walls makes this flask capable of withstanding temperature changes.

Graduated Cylinder Function: Used for measuring medium to large quantities of liquids.

Petri Dish Function: A Petri dish is a shallow cylindrical dish that has a lid, useful for watching chemical reactions.

Wash Bottle Function: Usually used to store water, for the purpose of “washing” glassware, or moving solid substances from one location to another.

Bunsen Burner Function: Used for heating chemicals using natural gas.

Flint Striker Function: Used for igniting a bunsen burner using flint friction.

Crucible Function: Used as a container for heating solid materials to very high temperatures.

Buret (or Burette) Function: Used for accurately dispensing very small quantities of liquids. Contains a stopcock to control the release of the liquid.

Beaker Function: Used for storing and pouring medium to large quantities of liquid. Not a precise measuring instrument!

Mortar and Pestle Function: Used to grind solid matter into powder.

Pipet (or Pipette) Function: Used to transfer small amounts of liquid.

Dropper Pipet Function: Used to transfer small amounts of liquid.

Wire Gauze Function: Used to spread out flame of the bunsen burner.

Ring stand Function: Used as a support for rings, clamps, etc.

Rubber Stopper Function: Used to plug test tubes and Erlenmeyer flasks. Different sizes are designated by different numbers. Some have one or two holes for glass tubing, thermometers, or other probes.

Ring Attaches to a stand to support beakers, funnels, etc. Function:

Stirring Rod A glass rod used for stirring liquid mixtures. Function:

Clay Pipe Triangle Function: Used to support the crucible on a ring stand. Function:

Test Tube Clamp Used to hold test tubes. Function:

Test Tube Function: Used for storing liquid chemicals and for watching reactions.

Test Tube Brush Function: Used for cleaning test tubes.

Thermometer Function: Used for measuring the kinetic energy of molecules in an object.

Watch Glass Function: Useful for watching chemical reactions of small quantities of liquid.

Evaporating Dish Function: Used to boil off liquids, leaving dissolved solids behind.

Crucible Tongs and Beaker Tongs Function: Used to pick up crucibles/beakers.

Spatula and Scoopula Function: Used to dispense solid, powdered chemicals. Function:

Forceps/Tweezers Used to manipulate small objects. Function:

Wing top Used to spread the bunsen burner flame. Function:

Triangular File Used to score glass prior to breaking. Function:

Well Plate Function: Used to perform small scale chemistry experiments (minimizing chemical usage and waste).

Test Tube Rack Used for storing (and drying) test tubes. Function:

Funnel Function: Used to transfer liquid chemical without spilling. Also used for filtration. Function:
