Age of Exploration Explorers are looking for a western route to Asia Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer who sailed west across the Atlantic Ocean in He came to the Caribbean islands. News of the new land quickly spread throughout Europe, gaining the interest of many others.

European Exploration of N. America

Henry Hudson His voyage on the “Half Moon” led him into New York Bay and up the Hudson River. He goes back to the Netherlands and tells all about the new land and its people. He also tells how eager these new people were to trade their furs for European goods!

Fashion Show Why were they interested in trading for furs? Clothing made from animal fur was in demand back in Europe.

Dutch West India Co. Dutch West India Company was established. Their goal to set up permanent settlements in North America. Here colonists would trade and trap for furs for the company to sell back in Europe. This would make them a lot of

New Netherland Fort Orange (Albany) was the first European permanent settlement established in New York. New Amsterdam (Manhattan) was the second permanent settlement.

The Plan Colonists from both Fort Orange and New Amsterdam are trading and trapping for furs. Boats from Fort Orange would bring goods to New Amsterdam. Boats from the Netherlands would pick up goods here and bring them back to Europe. This was a continuous cycle.
