Proficiency-based dual credit Closing the gap between high school and college

Perfect articulation College level skills and knowledge High school graduation > High school level skills and knowledge Students graduate prepared for college -- no gaps in skills or knowledge, but no overlap either

The gap College level skills and knowledge High school graduation > High school level skills and knowledge Students graduate without the skills and knowledge needed to do college level work

Overlap College level skills and knowledge High school graduation > College level skills developed in high school High school level skills and knowledge Students graduate having demonstrated college level skills and knowledge

We see all of these, in the same school, even in the same kid. The gapPerfect articulationOverlap College level skills and knowledge High school graduation > College level skills developed in high school High school level skills and knowledge Students graduate without the skills and knowledge needed to do college level work Students graduate prepared for college -- no gaps in skills or knowledge, but no overlap either Students graduate having demonstrated college level skills and knowledge

In reality How can we be flexible enough to serve a population with complex needs?

Proficiency based dual credit is all about LEARNING Students earn college credit when they demonstrate they have gained college level skills and knowledge – College faculty define proficiencies and expected level of performance – Student work determines credit – College faculty and high school teachers work together to evaluate work and share strategies to improve student learning – College faculty validate scoring to assure rigor

The development of proficiencies is incorporated into diverse classrooms Honors classes IB and AP classes But also regular classrooms where teachers increase, often affirm, the rigor of the course and its alignment with college-level proficiencies

Earning credit: When students excel, they earn college credit. The gapPerfect articulationOverlap College level skills and knowledge High school graduation > College level skills developed in high school High school level skills and knowledge Students graduate without the skills and knowledge needed to do college level work Students graduate prepared for college - - no gaps in skills or knowledge, but no overlap either Students graduate having demonstrated college level skills and knowledge

Closing the gap: More rigorous high school material better prepares students for college level work. Realistically….it varies by student, school and subject The gapPerfect articulationOverlap College level skills and knowledge High school graduation > College level skills developed in high school High school level skills and knowledge Students graduate without the skills and knowledge needed to do college level work Students graduate prepared for college - - no gaps in skills or knowledge, but no overlap either Students graduate having demonstrated college level skills and knowledge

Proficiency based dual credit is… Oriented around students and their learning Rigorous, and supported by evidence of student learning A partnership between high schools and colleges Flexible and accessible

Proficiency based dual credit is… Good for students: Serves student needs and rewards student achievements Good for high schools: Offers additional routes to pushing students academically and forming partnerships with higher education Good for higher education: Enables more students to graduate from high school more than ready for college

High school teachers, college faculty and professional learning communities: Writing and Biology

Introductory Biology for non-majors For most students, a capstone Biology course – Foundational work for Biology majors Aligned to National Standards

Willamette Promise The proficiencies are the same as what we expect for our BI 101 and 102 students: – Demonstrating scientific practice – Identifying, synthesizing and applying biological concepts that shape modern life
