ESP KTN Smart DC Project Management Review By Paul Huggett Electronics, Sensors, Photonics Knowledge Transfer Network (ESP KTN –

Project Execution: Scoping Scoping Workshop 1 – 8 th December Why is having a DC supply in a building a good/bad idea? Who else would be affected by this, and what would they think? What are the parallel technical opportunities? Mini-Project What would be done in the project Who could potentially do this work? - could be themselves. Could also suggest others with practical capability, solo organization or collaboration Outputs at dc/scoping-1 dc/scoping-1

Project Execution: Scoping Scoping Workshop 2 – 8 th February Scoping Workshop 3 – 16 th February Seeding the smart DC microgrid concept and its potential opportunities for R&D and commercial organisations Presenting and sharing thoughts from key industry players Providing a platform to gain the thoughts and ideas from the energy supply sector to help shape the upcoming funding competition Providing an early networking opportunity for organisations with an interest in this area to develop partnership links. Outputs at dc/scoping-3https://connect.innovateuk.org/web/smart- dc/scoping-3

In parallel to the scoping activities of the SIG, KTNs produced a series of reports between October 2011 and February. The main purpose was: To identify any gaps in current knowledge A specific focus on DC power systems. Reports Regulatory review Market and technological Costs benefit analysis Project Execution: Reviews

The three projects selected: DC Meter – Building a prototype fiscal DC meter and conducting a review of the current market opportunities, regulations and required specifications for fiscal DC meters. DC Protection – Review the technology issues and cross sector technology transfer opportunities related to circuit switching and protection of DC grids in domestic and small commercial buildings. DC Forming – Constructing a lab based (large bench) simulator of a typical whole house wiring/connection system for assessing and testing conversion to ELV DC LEDs, sockets and DC loads. Project Execution: Small Lab-scale Projects

Reports & Next Steps All Reports & Presentations from today will be available on the SMART DC SIG _connect website. Forthcoming ISI Call includes ring fenced SMART DC budget Please join us! Thankyou!
