What is Chemistry? Problem solving, critical thinking, creativity Working in pairs, make a list of 8-10 things that you encounter in everyday life that use chemistry. Think creatively! Ch. 1, Section 1.2, 1.3
Chemistry is… The study of the composition of matter (e.g. structure, properties) and the changes that matter undergoes. Physical change - a change that alters the physical state of the matter without changing its chemical composition. (ex. boiling water) whatscookingamerica.net
Chemistry is… The study of the composition of matter (e.g. structure, properties) and the changes that matter undergoes. Chemical changes - a change that alters the chemical composition (the actual chemical make- up) of the matter; sometimes involves a change in state, too. (ex. burning wood) pewclimate.org
In Chemistry we ask the questions: What is material made of? What is the make-up or internal arrangement? How does matter behave when it is heated or cooled or mixed with other materials?
Matter and its Characteristics Matter – anything that has mass and takes up space What is matter? (book, air, you) What is NOT matter? (heat, light, radio waves) Mass – measurement that reflects the amount of matter Weight – amount of matter and the effect of the earth’s gravitational pull on that matter. Slight differences from place to place
