Pretend that you are a businessman in a foreign country. In this foreign country, it is acceptable for parents to forcibly tattoo / brand their children at an early age. Under United States law, this is domestic abuse / a grave form of child endangerment. Imagine that you are invited to attend a wedding party. At this party, a child is being tattooed and branded by his parents in front of the guests. a) What would you do? b) Would you be justified in asking the parents to stop? c) Would you be justified in using force to make the parents stop?

Classwork for Thursday 2.07 (15 points) -DN / TTL (5 pts) -Presentations (5 pts) -Lecture Notes (5 pts)

Mughal Empire Muslim royal family that controlled India since the 1550s Capital: Dehli Starts to decline in power/influence, becomes weak Appoints nawabs (Muslim governors) to rule individual states regions.

Corporate Personhood Concept that corporations should be legally considered as “people” w/ rights. Corporations- like people- can be sued. Corporations- like people- have the right to… -free speech -make money -own guns / hire soldiers -overthrow other gov’ts?

Options for Presentation Powerpoint Skit (might require further explanation) Poster Song (might require further explanation) MUST BE DONE IN 15 MINUTES

How do they connect? After the British East India Company took over Bangladesh, it banned sati and executed Indians who forced women to burn themselves. It justified this by saying they were corporations- with the right to have armies/guns/do what they want.

SatiCorporations Too Large? Battle of Plassey

WONDERINGS Response / Evidence from Text 1. Should corporations be considered as people, with individual rights? 2. What sort of rights should a corporation/business be allowed to have? 3. Is it wrong for us as westerners to judge a different culture for their practices, even if they appear cruel to us? 4. Was the BEIC justified and “right” to prohibit sati in the territories that it controlled?

Homework (Due Friday 2.08) Complete your preparations for the Socratic Seminar tomorrow. Please make sure that each response is filled out completely with a specific reason or details from your readings/presentations. This will be collected.
