READING SEMINAR

READING SEMINAR V. LANGUAGE ARTS The reading seminar curriculum focuses on vocabulary & basic reading skills as applied to nonfiction. Where traditional language arts classes focus on the analysis of literary elements & comprehension of fictional novels & short stories, reading seminar classes focus on understanding & interpreting nonfiction materials such as textbook passages, magazine and newspaper articles, as well as other nonfiction pieces. The goal is to improve reading comprehension by reviewing & practicing individual reading skills & expanding students’ vocabulary.

The Reading Seminar class will focus on vocabulary and basic reading skills.

In class, students will apply their reading skills to different sources of nonfiction. Magazine articles Current events/news stories Classroom textbooks

The second part of this class is vocabulary. We will be using the Wordly Wise series on a weekly basis. Students will be assessed by the completion of their workbook & vocabulary quizzes. Students should expect a vocabulary quiz about every two weeks.

Wordly Wise 3000 The students’ vocabulary book is available online at There are also practice quizzes through Quizlet linked to my website.

READING SEMINAR Supplies Needed 1.An extra tab in student’s language arts binder. (Label this tab “Reading Seminar”) 2.Loose leaf paper in your binder. 3.Note cards 4.Writing utensil & highlighter 5.Silent reading book
