PREview: Jenny Weeks ChiMat Local Specialist South West investing in children's services for a fairer future

Heard of Preview? Centres on babies and families - how professionals can give proportionate support through delivery of the Healthy Child Programme Predicts poor outcomes –Health, behaviour and learning & development -> Resources allocated where needed

Introduction 1.Why it was developed 2.What it is 3.How it was developed 4.How to use the evidence locally

1. Why do we need to do this? Prevention –which children are likely to experience poor outcomes in the future Allocating preventive resources –supporting professional decision making and involving parents and communities in children’s future well- being

2. What it is Conversation Aids Population tool –maps potentially poor outcomes in 5 year’s

3. How it was developed York University analysis –Literature search –Analysis of Millennium Cohort Study (MCS) ChiMat created population tool –Collected datasets in 2 development sites –Analysis on MCS age 3 to outcomes at 5 yrs York University focus groups –What parents think –What professionals think

How did we develop this further? Year 3: ChiMat and DH developed… Three population tools based on the amount of data available locally 1.Pre-birth model 2.Post-birth model 3.Partnership model Professional resources Working with numerous pilot sites to test…. population tools and manuals website professional resources with MWs and HVs

© 2011 ChiMat 14 This chart shows importance of preventive intervention in the very early years to support child health, learning and behaviour outcomes

Prebirth data items – health data only Geographical Area code Child’s gender Mother’s age at 1st birth Relationship with child’s father at birth ie married or co- habiting Multiple birth Number of children in home First antenatal care eg 12 weeks or earlier Smoking during pregnancy IMD

Post birth data items – health data only Geographical Area code Child’s gender Mother’s age at 1st birth Relationship with child’s father at birth ie married or co-habiting Multiple birth Number of children in home First antenatal care eg 12 weeks or earlier Smoking during pregnancy IMD Birth weight Breast feeding BMI before pregnancy

Partnership – most comprehensive Geographical Area code Child’s gender Mother’s age at 1st birth Relationship with child’s father at birth ie married or co-habiting Multiple birth Number of children in home First antenatal care eg 12 weeks or earlier Smoking during pregnancy IMD Birth weight Breast feeding BMI before pregnancy Adult in employment Child first born

PREview … is a concept with great potential and possibilities, but: sites may collecting data items locally? data may not be held electronically data sharing may not be straightforward however: the research and evidence provides a solid knowledge base for predicting child outcomes provides a firm rationale for collecting specific pieces of information it has the potential to add new ways of working constructively with parents to benefit babies

Resources online… Evidence based research reports Population tools including a “how to” manual for local areas to use their own data and create their own local maps Professional resources – for HVs, MWs and others to see how they can utilise PREview in their work Visualisation diagrams and videos that help explain the relationship between factors at birth and 3yrs with outcomes at 5 years
