 The Long Essay & SAQs (And Toth’s Vocabulary Thematic Summaries)

 Formerly the FRQ (Free Response Question)  This has a developed thesis which is more than one sentence  The APUSH Revision changed the way these essays are graded…  Grades are based on a 7 point rubric  I have uploaded this rubric to my.ccsd.net

 There is no thesis development in the answer; just get to the point  Each SAQ should be about 1 page in length  Each part of the SAQ should be its own paragraph (not just a sentence)  Don’t label each part (for example 1a., 1b., etc.). You can identify the question by its number but then just write the paragraphs.

1. (a) On the eve of European contact, North America was comprised of A wide variety of native peoples with distinct languages and cultures. These cultures developed in relation to their environments. Broad trade Networks existed between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, as well as the Great Lakes and Gulf of Mexico. When the Europeans set foot in the Americas, they found a wealth of rich native cultures. (b.)The Atlantic World developed as a result of the contact between European, African and Native American cultures, beginning with the Voyage of Columbus which would introduce an exchange of new crops, Animals, ideas and germs. This Columbian Exchange would grow to Include the establishment of the Atlantic Slave Trade through the colonization Efforts of the Spanish. As slavery would spread into the French and British Colonies, Triangular Trade would develop between the Americas, Europe and Africa.

 You will have 4 SAQs (short answer questions) on the AP Exam  You will have 45 minutes to complete ALL of them (that’s about 10 minutes per question)  You will get a maximum of 3 points for each SAQ (I’m pretty sure that’s how they are scored. Its still kinda unclear)

 These should be typed. You may double space if you like. I find that 1.5 is ideal (easiest for Toth to read)  Please title each summary by the NAME of the theme you are writing about: Identity, Peopling, Politics and Power, etc.  Please bold or highlight the vocab words so they are easy for me to identify

 If I circle something, it means I question it or that it is incorrect  If I underline something, that means it was well- said, it impressed me, etc.  “ref” refers to reference. So “good ref” means that was a good thing to put in (I was impressed)  If you ever can’t read my comments, just ask
