Welcome to Chemistry Mrs. Cooper

About Me Mrs. Michelle Cooper Hartselle with husband and 8 year old daughter Science Degree in Chemistry/Biology (1987) Worked as a Chemist ( ) Science Teacher (1994 to now) for Morgan County

Lectures and Notes available online Keep all materials in your “Classwork Folder” : Notes, handouts, lab directions, quizzes. Labs and Lecture on alternate days Our Chemistry Class

Course Description The nature of this course will be to discover the science of Chemistry through powerpoint lectures, laboratory activities and peer collaboration so that all students are sufficiently prepared to enroll in a General Chemistry course.

Classwork Folders Kept in the classroom. used for you to receive graded homework, to turn in homework, receive worksheets, lecture & lab materials. I may also put notes to YOU from me in this folder. So you will need to look through it first thing every day. Keeping a neat and orderly classwork folder is part of your participation grade. Each day folders are picked up at the beginning of class and turned back in at the end of class.

Notebook: A folder or binder will be required to keep your lecture notes, vocabulary, returned work and paper for class. Having a neat and orderly notebook is part of your participation grade.

Homework: Any homework assigned will be checked for completion. Some homework assignments will be collected and graded for understanding.

Why Am I Now Going to Go Over all the rules and expectations? Because Rules = Success No Rules = Failure

Classwork/Participation Appropriate conduct and respect is expected at all times and for all activities and situations. No cell phones or music players. If I see them, I take them. Be on time to class or I WILL report you as tardy. No excuse.

Be prepared with paper and pen. During lecture, do not talk or ask questions. You should be busy taking notes. Questions may be asked when directed or at the end of class. During labs and projects, everyone is expected to actively participate.

Quizzes There will be a quiz at least once a week. Though students will be given advance notice on most quizzes, pop-quizzes may occur at the start, in the middle, or at the end of some classes. Pop-quizzes will not be weighed as heavily as normal quizzes.

Labs: Lab activities are scheduled every other day. You are expected to follow safe lab practices. Lab grades will be based on participation.

Project A multimedia project is planned for the session. Students will collaborate with each other to create and present a powerpoint as part of their final grade. The powerpoint will showcase the chemistry used during the lab activities. Students may take pictures and videos of their lab work. The powerpoints will be published on the internet.

What is Chemistry? the study of the structure and properties of

What is Matter

A. The study of matter and energy Involves the study of…

B. Properties of matter a. Physical properties b. Chemical properties

C. Structure of matter what is it made up of and how is it put together

D. Forms of energy all matter is linked to energy in some way

E. How energy affects matter Does matter change when we increase temperature? What about if we expose it to light or electricity?

Matter

A. Properties of Matter

“Properties” are characteristics that help identify or classify matter.

Pick an object in the room What are its physical properties? Observed characteristics: Color, shape, odor, hardness, temperature, texture, volume, size, density, etc.

What are its chemical properties? Flammability, acidity, how reactive it is, how it changes in a chemical reaction

B. All matter takes up space (volume)and contains a certain amount of material (mass).

In other words, matter can be detected and measured

B. States of Matter Matter can exist in 4 phases: solid, liquid, gas, plasma.

C. Matter is made up of Atoms The atoms arrange themselves into elements, molecules and compounds

D. Matter exists as either a pure substance or as a mixture.

Matter Pure Substance s Mixtures

Name some matter that exists as a pure substance

Name some matter that exists as a mixture

Tomorrow’s Lab DENSITY: a physical property of matter MIXTURE: a physical arrangement of matter

Density What is happening here with Ball 1 and Ball 2? Why do they behave differently?

Density: a physical property of matter What happens when an oil tanker leaks on the ocean? less dense The oil floats on the water since it is less dense.

Density is mass per unit volume. Mathematically a "per" statement is translated as a division. The units are in grams per cm 3 or grams per mL Density = mass = g/mL volume Mathematical Definition of Density

Densities of Common Elements and Compounds Substance Density grams / mL Pine wood Water1.00 Aluminum, Al 2.70 Iron, Fe 7.80 Gold, Au Mercury, Hg 13.5

Tomorrow We will calculate some densities of different materials and try to determine the identity of an unknown metal.

Matter Pure Substance s Mixtures Tomorrow we will explore mixtures, determine if an item is a mixture and if so, can it be separated into its parts.

8 things you should know for the quiz: What is Chemistry? What is Matter? Matter can be described by its ______ properties and _______ properties. What are some physical properties? What are two characteristics of ALL matter?

What are the 4 states of matter? Matter can be classified as either a ______ ________ or a ________. What is the mathematical definition of density?
