Word Problems Fun with Give and Take Madhavi Ranade PRT Kendriya Vidyalaya Yavatmal

Lets see the clue words which suggest the subtraction MINUS Less than decreased difference More than Fewer than Take away How many left? How many more?

Number of things in Group 1 Number of things in Group 2 Total Number of Things altogether Remember the situation which is shown by If you know the total number of things and numbers in one group and not in the other, We SUBTRACT.

Subtraction is the opposite of addition. Example : Out of 48 photos, 17 are coloured. How many are black and white? 48 photos 17 coloured photos and Some black and white photos Here number of black and white photos that is number of group 2 items is not known but the total is given, So it is a subtraction situation

Situation 2 Something goes away, given or is taken away. This is the classic subtraction situation. Example 1: Radha has Rs. 300 and she bought a doll for Rs180. How much money is left with her? Situation 3 " How many more" situations (= difference) are solved by subtraction. Note that once again, nothing is "taken away" or going away. Example 2 Krishna has 24 cows and Balrama has 13 cows. How many more cows does Krishna have?.

Read the problem Read again to see what is given Think over what is to be found out Represent the Problem by means of a drawing or a known situation plan Analyze the mathematical operation Decide the operation Solve the Problem Do appropriate calculations Check your answer
