“STEPPING INTO THE VOID: MY PERSONAL JOURNEY TO ACADEMIC LEADERSHIP” Presented by Dr. Anna M. Hammond Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs Bennett College for Women Greensboro, North Carolina

Launch of the Women in Higher Education Executive Leadership Programme HOMECOMING!

A Global Perspective “Dubois was unwavering in his quest and commitment to equality of peoples of color of the World.” Karen Jenkins Past President of Brethern Colleges Abroad

A Global Perspective “The Problem of the 20 th Century is the problem of the color line.” W.E.B. Dubois The same is true today!

Three Giants W.E.B. Dubois Mary McCloud Bethune Walter White “There should be an international bill of Human Rights and the dismantlement of colonial empires.”

Equity for Women There must be equity for women of all races in executive leadership positions in higher education, not only in South Africa, but in the world.

What is the Scope of the Problem? CONTRIBUTING FACTORS Stereotypes associate leadership with maleness (Schein (1975,1990). Women more than men must walk a tightrope of conflicting expectations(Keller1999). Women encounter discrimination(Valian1999)

The Chronicle of Higher Education Almanac, 2001 Gender Male 78.9% Female 21.1% Race White 87.2% Black 6.3%

Donna H. Oliver, Ph.D. Vice President for Academic Affairs Bennett College for Women 1987 National Teacher of the Year International Speaker/Lecturer Chronicle of Higher Education Profile, 1995 Board of Governors, Elon Homes for Children (Finance Committee, Education Committee) White House Commission for a Drug Free America (Appointed by President Ronald Reagan)

Executive Leaders/Managers High Moral and Ethical Standards High Expectations (Self and Others) High Standards (Self and Others) Confidence Lead with Integrity Politically Astute Resourceful Visionary and gets others to buy into vision Life-long Learner

Dr. Donna Oliver Demonstrates that being a manager is not a series of mechanical tasks, but rather a set of human interactions based on high moral and ethical standards commensurate with high expectations. Willingly serves as a mentor.

Women in Higher Education USA In 1989, there were 328 women chief executive officers of colleges and universities, constituting 11% of all CEO’s of institutions of higher educations accredited by the six major regional accrediting associations. In 1989, minority women represented 13% of all women presidents. They were located mostly in public institutions. In 1987, 27% of deans in academic areas were women. In 1987, minority women held only 2% of all Dean Positions. According to the statistics given, women are more likely to be found in student affairs and external affairs than in academic affairs and administrative affairs or in the position of college president.

Women in Higher Education USA Overall in 1987, women were more likely to hold high level positions as administrators in private institutions than in public institutions. Of all positions in administration listed in 1987, women held 41% in private 4-year institutions, and only 30% in public 4-year institutions. In public 2-year institutions, women held 36% of the administrative positions: and in private 2-year institutions, they held 48%. In 1987, in 4-year public institutions, 10% of Deans of Arts and Sciences were women. The percentage was 23% in 4-year private institutions and 18% in 2-year public institutions (data not available for 2-year private institutions).
