M.A.I.N. CAUSES OF WWI

Trade Routes 1400s—major trade routes from the East to Europe went through 2 Italian cities (Venice & Genoa)  -Italian merchants marked up the prices on the goods & sold them throughout Europe Other European countries resented the huge profits made by Italians & began to look for other routes to the East…

The Three G’ s Look at the pictures and guess what the three biggest reasons Europeans wanted to explore the new world. What were they? G…

Why did the Europeans Go Exploring? The 3 G’s… 1. GOLD  New trade routes opened up opportunities for wealth 2. GOD  Missionaries spread Christianity 3. GLORY  Explorers were considered heroes; countries competed for colonies

Building Empires Europeans created new trade routes to bring products from Europe to India, China, & the Spice Islands This contributed to the expansion of the empires of  Portugal  Spain  England  Netherlands  Germany  Italy  France… They weren’t satisfied… They wanted more overseas land.

Race for Resource and Land created …  M ilitarism M ilitarism  A lliance A lliance  I mperialism I mperialism  N ationalism N ationalism

Building up of strong armed forces and a powerful military.  Before World War I tension and rivalry amongst European nations led countries like Germany and Britain to expand the army and navy in preparation for war. 

An agreement or promises to defend and help another country.  In the early 1900’s, nations feared one another. Each nation was afraid another would invade or try to take over its territory.  When an alliance is signed, those countries become known as Allies.

Imperialism is when a country takes over new lands or countries, and controls their government, economy, and culture.

Strong pride in your country, and willing to defend it at any cost..
