Why Do We Volunteer? There are many reasons to give back:  To feel more connected to ACUI and/or your region  To give back to ACUI  To create and maintain relationships with colleagues  To develop skills that you may not have or use in your current job

Personal Stories Presenters will share their stories of involvement within ACUI

Quotes from Volunteers “Volunteering and being involved in ACUI has enabled me the opportunity to get to know and learn from some amazing professionals in this field, many of whom I consider my friends. Because of ACUI, I can pick up a phone or shoot off an or text and know that I have colleagues out there willing to help me with the advice or resources I need to help me be successful for my students.” - Joe Gutowski, Board of Trustees “Being a member of Volunteer Development Team (VDT) has been an incredible experience. I have the pleasure of learning from and working with some of the most dedicated professionals from around the nation. The VDT continues to focus on and enhance the ACUI volunteer experience and in doing so we are helping to advance the association- to the great benefit of all college union professionals. I feel such a deeper and more meaningful connection to ACUI because of my experience, and it has connected me to more resources and colleagues which has helped me as a professional. Volunteers are truly the driving force of our association and our work on the Volunteer Development Team keeps us moving in the right direction.” - Morgan Meehan, Volunteer Development Team

Quotes from Volunteers “I can honestly say that I do not think that I would be in this profession today if it were not for ACUI…the professional relationships that I have been able to cultivate through the years as a result of volunteering in numerous capacities have allowed me to see the a bigger picture of what it means to be a Union Professional.” – Branden Dalley, Regional Director “I really enjoy working on the Research Program Team. It is such a joy to connect with folks from around the country every few weeks. I particularly like the opportunity to step out of the everyday issues and think more broadly about our goals and work. Participation has also introduced me to additional ACUI Colleagues. I feel grateful for ACUI and this is a small way to ensure its success and my personal development.” – Christina Brenner, Research Program Team

Quotes from Volunteers “When I first joined the Education & Research Fund (ERF) team, I had no idea what to expect. But the last four years have been awesome and volunteering with ERF has really helped to shape my ACUI experience. I have always volunteered but ERF changed my perspective and has helped me focus to want to give not only of my time but financially. Being able to raise money, ask my peers for money, and then see it put into action in the form of an endowment or scholarship is rewarding. ACUI is important to me and it is the ERF experience that keeps me grounded in it.” – Michael Sprinkle, Education & Research Fund “As the chair of the Women’s Leadership Community of Practice, I have had the unique opportunity to develop real relationships with colleagues throughout ACUI. The connections I have made throughout the organization extend throughout the year, not just at the annual conference. I am able to reach out to colleagues across the US and internationally to seek advice on particular issues. Beyond the advice and resources that have become available through these connections, the friendships are even more important. Connecting with other professionals as a friend about the issues we face in higher education is a blessing. Some of my best friends have come through the connections I have made through the Women’s Leadership CoP. ” - Dana Sample, Women’s Leadership Community of Practice Leader

Quotes from Volunteers “My parents taught me early on how important it was to help others, so they encouraged me to join them in volunteering. In college, I appreciated what my mentors did to help me develop, and that reinforced my desire to help students achieve their goals.” – Izzy Sandoval, 2015 Conference Program Team Member
