Module 3: Talking About Art Instructor: Brenda Taylor

 You will have an assignment at the very onset of this module. When you enter this folder you will be asked to answer a series of questions. Follow the instructions for a grade.  You will be introduced to talking about art; how to determine it’s successfullness, and how to determine what the artist may have been trying to convey to the audience.  You will be asked to look at a video, “Every painting in the Museum of Modern Art.”

 Critiquing Art and Guidelines – You will be asked to look at a Powerpoint presentation, or download and read a PDF, both of which discuss the steps of critiquing an artwork.  You will next download a PDF which you will use as a guideline for writing an art criticism paper.

 In this section, you will view a video from 60 Minutes, in which Mickey Rooney talks about public art.

 Watch another video about art, by ArtsPass.  Watch a Powerpoint about why man creates art.

 You will choose between a PDF and a Word document to use as your guidelines for the first assignment. (both documents contain the same information)  You will watch a slideshow about Christo and Jean Claude, two artists who are classified as Environmental Installation Artists. (These artists will erect or create art that is temporary, only meant to be seen for a certain length of time.)  After viewing and reading about Christo and Jean Claude and their unique style of creating art, you will create an art critique. In other words, you will reflect and write a critical analysis of Christo and Jean Claude's artistic style. You will use the guidelines from Critiquing Art & Guidelines: Art Criticism Guidelines Critiquing Art & Guidelines: Art Criticism Guidelines  Remember to include comments using all the parts of a critique: Description, Analyis, Interpretation, and Judgement. If you would like to do some research about Christo & Jean Claude on your own you can.  Think of these questions as you are writing: Are Christo and Jean Claude successful in what they are trying to do? Do you feel their work is art? Why or why not?  Post your writing to the forum by clicking on the “Add a new topic” button at the bottom of the Christo and Jean Claude Art Critique section.  When you are finished, respond to at least ONE other classmate by posting a response to their critique.

 Attend the WIMBA Live Class session for 100 points.  If you cannot, listen to the archives and submit a summary via to me, for 100 points.  If you cannot listen to the archives, view the Powerpoint presentation, which will be attached to Wednesday’s announcement (Learning Block). Submit a summary via for 100 points.

 This is an opportunity for extra credit!!  Go to the Museum of Modern Art website ( and find a work of art from a contemporary artist. Using the guidelines for writing an art critique, write your own and submit it to me via . Be sure to cite all sources and include an image of the work of art that you are choosing to illustrate! I will give you 20 points extra credit for this assignment!
