University Memorial Center Sustainability Programs

Campus Sustainability Background 2005 the City of Boulder and Boulder County passed zero waste declarations including an 90% diversion rate by then Governor Ritter signed into law a series of goals – Including 20% reduction in paper use and zero-waste operations 2009 the Board of Regents passed a resolution in support of the State’s zero-waste priority with a 90% diversion rate by 2020 In April 2010 the CU Student Government passed a zero waste ( 72CLB 15) bill to reduce materials necessary for operations and achieve a 90% diversion of non-reusable material by recycling, composting, and take-back programs

2015 Campus Diversion Rates Over 2,541 tons were reused, recycled, and composted equaling 43% of campus materials from area landfills

Campus Conceptual Plan for Carbon Neutrality 20% reduction in greenhouse gases by 2020 through conservation and cogeneration use 50% reduction by % reduction by 2080

Zero Waste At Athletic Events Virtually all packaging used in the stadium and arenas are recyclable, compostable or refillable. Beginning in 2008, Folsom Stadium was converted to a Zero Waste venue making it the largest Zero Waste collegiate sporting venue in the nation 83% of all waste is diverted from the landfills (90.31% for the 2014 Football Season)

“Give and Go” Donation Drive Housing and Dining Services and Environmental Center partner each year for the “Give and Go” Donation Drive. Collected items include: AppliancesSkis and SnowboardsSmall electronics BicyclesNon-perishable foodSmall furniture BooksOffice SuppliesSmall Rugs ToolsClothing, Hats, ShoesSporting Goods Foam bed padsHangersTV’s and Stereos 150 tons of reusable items are collect at move out each year

Green Greeks The Greeks work with the Xcel Energy funded $CORE program to help Greek Houses save money on their energy and water bills. Student Technicians install CFS bulbs, low-Flow shower heads, sink aerators, and weather stripping houses. Each house has a Sustainability Chairs. Each year the Green Greeks holds the Panhellenic Green Cup. The winning sorority will have $1,000 donated to their Philanthropy.

Off Set Program In 2012 CUSG and the CU Environmental Center started purchasing carbon Offsets to mitigate greenhouse gasses and the climate foot print of energy used by the student owned buildings on campus.
