What LLL is NOT Vague set of skills that cannot be measured Ability to use Google and get a hit Ability to use MEDLINE and retrieve something A list of references

What LLL IS Self-directed learning Knowing what we already know and what we don’t (i.e., Learning Issues) Learning to learn Learning to critically assess what we read, hear, or see Learning to re-assess the whole process on an ongoing process

What is LLL at IUSM? Knowing our limitations (gaps) in medical knowledge, experience, and skills Identifying resources that can be used to fill in those gaps Critically assessing the quality of the information we obtain (via any format) based on criteria of validity, reliability, etc.

LLL examples at IUSM IU South Bend –Medical Genetics –Histology/Embryology IU Indianapolis –CHD –EBM

LLL assessment at IUSM IU South Bend –Histology/Embryology (MS1) PowerPoint presentation (10 min) below –Medical Genetics (MS2) 1.Search a rare disorder using a variety of databases (MEDLINE, OMIM) 2. Search same disorder on the WWW for patient information 3.Summarize search strategies, professional & patient information identified & located via an attachment
