What do you know already about questions and questioning? ????????????????????????????????

In 1912, Stevens stated that approximately eighty percent of a teacher's school day was spent asking questions to students. More contemporary research on teacher questioning behaviors and patterns indicate that this has not changed. Teachers today ask between questions each day (Leven and Long, 1981). (Brualdi 1998)(Brualdi 1998)

With Ted’s three questions in mind consider the ten common questioning pitfalls (Kidd & Czerniawski 2010, p. 198). Do you recognise any of the pitfalls? Provide some examples.

Techniques/tips Socratic – elicit/engage in dialogue - not filling with content (Kidd & Czerniawski 2010, p. 198) How? Conceptual clarification questions – tell me more can you give me an example? Probing assumptions Do you agree or disagree with...? Probing rationale, reasons and evidence Why is that happening? Questioning viewpoints and perspectives What is the difference between... and...? Probe implications and consequences What are the implications of... ?

Techniques/tips Rolling – scaffolding

Types Procedural – keeping the classroom running Covergent – closing in/funnelling Divergent – open ended Leading – hard for students to disagree

Self audit – are you using questions effectively? p the ‘dos’ – do you? ????????????????????????????????

Feedback Sandwich Medals and Missions Feed forward NVC alignment

Purpose, meta-cognition, risk-taking, engagement and questioning – do your classroom cultures support this?
