Understandings of Globalization (Chapter 1) Vs.

To what extent should globalization shape identity?  How should we think about globalization?  People have different thoughts and opinions because: Their perspectives are different Their perspectives are different Their experiences are different Their experiences are different

Is this cool?

We can think about globalization as:  A process that is making the world’s citizens increasingly connected and interdependent  The world is seemingly smaller than ever before  This influence exists as 3 dimensions (Economic, Social, Political) (Economic, Social, Political)

What are some examples of how globalization influences you?  Socially -  Economically -  Politically -

The Dimensions of Globalization 1)Economic – refers to the exchange of goods/managing of resources that occurs on a global scale  Many of the items we buy are not made in our country  Citizens in other countries buy items made in other parts of the world as well  Many companies now operate on a global scale as well; operating in 2 or more countries  These companies are referred to as trans- national corporations or multi-nationals

 Categories of transnational’s a) producers – i.e. – Shell Oil, Nike – they produce products for sale they produce products for sale b) retailers – i.e.- Wal-Mart, Blockbuster, McDonalds – they sell goods and McDonalds – they sell goods and services services  The desire for increasing profits has caused companies such as these to expand their operations overseas   Xp-aU&feature=related Xp-aU&feature=related

What are some reasons why Transnational's operate in other nations  cheap raw materials  cheap labour supply  good transportation opportunities  access to market, where the goods are sold  friendly government policies  “outsourcing” is the answer to everything!

Benefits and Negatives of transnational's operating in a Developed nation  Positives  Negatives

What could the implications be involving transnational's operating in developing nations (India)? What could the implications be involving transnational's operating in developing nations (India)?  This clip shows some very interesting points about transnational's expanding into other countries.  What is happening here?  Outsourcing!

Transnational's expanding to developing nations BenefitsNegatives

What happens when...  A nation’s valuable resources (ie oil, natural gas, fish, lumber, or even fresh water) are bought and sold globally?  Many resources are limited – demand is no longer restricted to local markets  Nations of the world are competing for the same limited resources.  Why is oil so expensive when we drill for it in our own back yard? Oil is traded on a global market. Our oil is priced accordingly Oil is traded on a global market. Our oil is priced accordingly Large Cartels control most oil production thus setting the price of oil (OPEC) Large Cartels control most oil production thus setting the price of oil (OPEC)

The Dimensions of Globalization 2)Social – refers to globalization affecting culture and identity  Culture and identity are shaped by kinship (family), beliefs (ideology/religion), history, location, or particular world view  Globalization is changing all of this -some cultures are dissolving into others others -identities within groups are being lost

Information Technology is a powerful force affecting societies  Television, radio and the Internet (media) have dissolved our sense of cultural boundaries  Many people dress the same in different parts of the world after following common fashions seen in the media  Music is traded globally through the internet  Information technology has had positive and negative affects on society

What happens when governments, or transnational companies gain control of the media?  Positives-  Negatives-

The Dimensions of Globalization 3) Political – refers to globalization affecting government decision-making  Could be in the form of political pressure – ie our government must abide by the rules set out in international agreements -Why do we pay so much for gasoline in Alberta when we own the oil?? in Alberta when we own the oil?? -Answer!- it’s expensive because we are obligated by trade agreements to pay “world obligated by trade agreements to pay “world price” for oil products price” for oil products

 Agreements don’t just cover trade – some involve military operations (North Atlantic Treaty Organization – NATO) and involvements in international cooperation and humanitarian efforts (United Nations)  As a member of the NATO Alliance, we are obligated to take part in the “War on Terror” in Afghanistan  As a member of the UN, we are obligated to take part in UN Peacekeeping and Peacemaking efforts, and in aid efforts to nations in need  Sometimes, differing political agendas can alter the direction another nation takes....

Bush outlines Iraqi post-war reconstruction plans US President Bush outlined further details today of his administration's post- war plans to reconstruct the Iraqi economy, provide employment for the Iraqi people and help "kickstart democracy" in Iraq. To alleviate widespread hunger after a decade of sanctions, Bush said that corporations such as McDonald's, KFC, and Burger King have agreed to accelerate plans to open franchises in Baghdad and other urban areas. Disney Corporation has indicated an intention to build a destination resort near Baghdad, featuring characters from Disney's Aladdin franchise, providing much-needed jobs to the next generation of Iraqis. A consortium of resort developers have been asked by the Bush administration to exploit the enormous opportunities for casinos, nightclubs, and golf courses to serve the international managers of the Iraqi oil industry.
