2 Agenda Today we will discuss: –a framework illustrating the steps involved in focus group research –the role of research (study) questions in the framework –the benefits of using a framework to design and implement a focus group research study

4 The “Power” of Study Questions Study questions help determine: –topic areas to explore –participant selection – type of focus group in-person telephone online –synchronous –asynchronous –recruitment plan

7 Determining Study Questions Review the literature on the topic; Meet with other stakeholders for input; Conduct key informant interviews; Decide upon a theoretical framework, if appropriate.

8 Tips from the Field Invest the time upfront to clarify and agree upon study questions Revisit study questions frequently and revise or refine as necessary.

9 Benefits of Using a Framework A framework: –provides a user-friendly tool to help newcomers understand focus group research –provides a logical, and often sequential, way to conduct and manage the many steps involved –helps to ensure that data collected, and subsequent report, meets the researcher’s informational needs
